Solar Eclipse QSO Party Seeks Amateurs and Radio Enthusiasts for Global Experiment

Solar Eclipse QSO Party Seeks Amateurs and Radio Enthusiasts for Global Experiment

ARLX013 Solar Eclipse QSO Party Seeks Amateurs and Radio Enthusiasts
for Global Experiment

ARRL is proud to partner with HamSCI to help promote participation
in the Solar Eclipse QSO Party (SEQP). SEQPs are a series of global
experiments -- and you can be a part of them. Solar eclipses will
pass across the continental United States on October 14, 2023, and
April 8, 2024.

During these celestial events, you can join thousands of fellow
amateurs as part of the largest crowd-sourced event for ham radio
scientific exploration. The SEQP is part of the Festivals of Eclipse
Ionospheric Science and is for learning more about how the
ionosphere works.

All radio amateurs need to do is operate using any mode and any band
for all or part of the day, then upload their logs. Participation
can be from anywhere; you don't need to be near the path of the
eclipse to contribute valuable data. You don't even have to be a
licensed ham to participate in the experiment (only to transmit).

For SEQP contest and rules, visit
https://www.hamsci.org/contest-info .

For information on the Gladstone Signal Spotting Challenge using CW,
WSPR, and FST4W, go to https://www.hamsci.org/contest-info .

If you're an SWL or AM DXer, you might be interested in the Medium
Wave Recording Event. Go to https://www.hamsci.org/mw-recordings/
for more information .  Or just get on the air and help provide data
to better understand the ionosphere.

The first SEQP is on Saturday, October 14, 2023, from 1200 - 2200
UTC, and participants may use any band or mode (except WARC bands).
Researchers will take the submitted logs and work to derive
meaningful observations from the data.

ARRL members can find out more about the SEQP by reading "The Solar
Eclipse QSO Party: A Fun Way to Support Radio Science" in the
September/October 2023 issue of On the Air magazine. The On the Air
podcast will feature the article's author, Gary Mikitin, AF8A,
talking about the event. The episode will go live on October 12.

Hard - Core - DX Digest, Vol 248, Issue 10

Hard - Core - DX Digest, Vol 248, Issue 10

** ANTARCTICA [and non]. 15475.98 RC USB, Saturday September 9 at
1741, LRA36 is on already S5/S7 with echoey music; 1806 the poetic
scripted piece about Antarctica; 1807 into music. Still at 1935,
S7/9+10 into Argentine remote. I was mainly listening instead to the
opera from China on the WFMT Network via KUCO. Still on at 2112 when
I`m mainly listening to `Film At Five` on WCLV analyzing Star Wars
music. 2237 still on with music; off before next check 2329 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MALDIVES [non]. 11620, Sept 9 at 1500, V of Martyrs Korea s/on in
English, refers to ``tiny Maldives``, and continues preaching in
English rather than Dhivehi sometimes. In this case I`ll not trap them
since per Almanaque Mundial, total land area of 1200 islands is only
298 sq km. And anything next to India seems tiny by comparison. S9/+20
as usual here on the opposite worldside, making the ``Uzbekistan``
nominal site unbelievable; more likely Taiwan or Kununurra, Australia
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785.009, Sept 9 at 2238 tune-in, S9+40 into UTwente, with
a recipe involving chicken broth, outro as `Turkey`s Geomarked [sic]
Products` to 2240, then ``with you every hour`` promo; 2241 song, with
some distortion worse during music; 2245 multi-lingual ID filler reel;
2247 song; 2251 s/off; 2253 IS; 2256 start German IDs twice a minute;
2359.6* cut off air just in time to prevent German hour. Something`s
always erroneous at Emirler. Before it went off I checked for splatter
above and below 11785 like last time, but that seems OK now and
Romania 11800 unscathed (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. eQSL for Texas Radio SW, which presented two WORLDs of
RADIOs from 1986, #322 & 342, as recorded by Mick Delmage, Alberta,
off WRNO; in a salute to 2200 WORs recently completed; Aug 27, 2023 at

or #145 via http://www.worldofradio.com/QSL.html
Many thanks to Terry Colgan, who surprisingly had to suspend TRSW after
the Sept 3 programs; and our best wishes to him.

Sked on WRMI had been UT Sun 00-01 on 5950, Sun 12-13 on 15770. I`m
wondering whether some previous TRSWs might appear in those slots
still. WRMI skedgrids not updated to show anything else (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

Also confirmed Saturday September 9 at 1936 on WA0RCR, 1860 AM, MO,

Thanks this week for financial support from Christopher Campbell,
Columbus OH, for a contribution via PayPal in US funds but not
necessarily, to woradio at yahoo.com and says, ``For your continuing
generous effort to supply daily DX news about the world to the world.
My greatest appreciation and admiration lay upon you. Your work means
so much to me. I love the "tips for rational living.``

One may also contribute by MO or check on a US bank to:
Glenn Hauser, PO Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VATICAN. 15595, Sept 9 at 0633, S9 best signal on band has RCC news
in English. VR, SMG is scheduled everywhere as in French at 0630-0645;
except Sundays (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 15700, Sept 9 at 0633, JBA carrier vs S9 line noise
level still not repaired by OG&E 3+ days later. Only thing listed is
World Music Radio, DENMARK, per EiBi 24 hours, but per Aoki 09-16
only. It`s low power and I have never managed even a carrier in
numerous bandscans here nor on 25800 or 5930. Operator said it would
be 24/7 thru September with 300 W AM on 15700. As recently as Sept 3,
Carlos Gon?alves, Portugal logged it on 15699.7; on Aug 31, 15699.642
per Wolfgang B?schel. I did not notice it being so far off-frequency
but was not alert for that. Maybe something else. Propagation?
Surprisingly, Vatican q.v. was in well on 15595, with a bit more power
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Idalia Prompts Amateur Radio Activations

ARLB019 Idalia Prompts Amateur Radio Activations

Volunteers of ARRL are activating ahead of Tropical Storm Idalia.
The storm, which is forecast to intensify into a hurricane, was
tracking from the Caribbean into the Gulf of Mexico, between Cancun
and the western tip of Cuba. Models agreed that it could make
landfall on the Florida Gulf Coast as a Category 3 hurricane on
Wednesday.

In a planning call Monday night with leadership of ARRL Florida
sections and ARRL Headquarters staff, Section Emergency Coordinator
of the ARRL Northern Florida Section Arc Thames, W4CPD, shared plans
for activation of Amateur Radio Emergency Service volunteers within
the section. "Beginning at 7:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday, August
28, ARES volunteers will begin to staff AUXCOMM positions at the
State EOC," he said.

The Florida Statewide Amateur Radio Network (SARnet) is the primary
emergency communications system planned for use. The system is a
series of linked UHF repeaters that covers the entire state. There
are also HF nets planned as a backup.

Radio amateurs are asked to yield HF frequencies to emergency nets
when they are activated.

The Hurricane Watch Net (HWN) was activated Monday afternoon. HWN
activated on 14.325 MHz at 2:00 PM EDT (1800 UTC) and planned to
remain active until 11:00 PM EDT (0300 UTC) or until propagation was
lost. HWN then planned to activate on 7.268 MHz at 7:00 PM EDT (2300
UTC) and remain active until 11:00 PM EDT (0300 UTC).

HWN Activation Plans for Tuesday, August 29 through Wednesday,
August 30:

20-meters: 14.325 MHz at 8:00 AM EDT (1200 UTC) daily until
propagation is lost at night.

40-meters: 7.268 MHz starting at 7:00 PM EDT (2300 UTC) Tuesday.
HWN will remain active on this frequency throughout the remainder of
this event.

"We will suspend operations each morning at 7:30 AM EDT to allow the
Waterway Radio and Cruising Club Net - WRCC (Waterway Net) to
conduct their daily morning Net. After the Water Way Net has
concluded, generally around 8:30 AM ET, we will resume operations,"
wrote net manager Bobby Graves, KB5HA

The WX4NHC amateur radio station at the National Hurricane Center]
also activated Monday and plans to be active Tuesday and Wednesday
as the storm continues towards Florida.

WX4NHC is active on the HWN frequencies but will also utilize the
VoIP Hurricane Net: IRLP node 9219 / EchoLink WX-TALK Conference
node 7203. Details can be found at, http://www.voipwx.net/ .

The station is also monitoring WinLink reports sent to,
wx4nhc@winlink.org (subject line must contain //WL2K).

WX4NHC asks that radio amateurs please relay any surface reports
(weather data, flooding, damage) to them by one of the nets or an
online hurricane report form at, https://w4ehw.fiu.edu/WX-form1.php .

The Hurricane VoIP Net plans to activate on Tuesday. "In addition to
reports meeting Skywarn criteria, the operators, using Echolink
WXTalk conference server 7203 and Internet Relay Protocol 9219, will
be joined to the Kansas Sunflower Network offering Hamshack Hotline
94032, Echolink KC5FM-r, Allstar 28848, and other modes such as
D-Star, Fusion, M17, and P25," wrote Lloyd Colston, KC5FM, Public
Information Officer for the VoIP net.

ARRL Director of Emergency Management Josh Johnston, KE5MHV, and the
ARES headquarters staff are staying in frequent touch with members
of the ARRL Northern Florida Section. Section Manager of the ARRL
Southern Florida Section, Barry Porter, KB1PA, sent a message to the
hams in the lower part of the Sunshine State. "Much of the northern
part of our state will be facing impacts from Idalia, which could be
a Category 3 or higher storm. In other words, they might be the
victims. Since the southern part of Florida will not see much severe
impact, we should be ready to assist with backup communications and
welfare messages, if asked," he wrote.

ARRL will provide updates to the situation as it develops. Members
in Florida are encouraged to monitor local emergency officials and
prepare to take action to keep themselves safe as the storm moves
toward them.
